MELT MY EYEZ: ALBUM COVER DESIGN

PROJECT BRIEF

For this project, I redesigned Denzel Curry’s album "Melt My Eyez"(2022). My goal was to create a design that differs from the original but also stays consistent with Denzel Curry’s style. I studied Denzel Curry’s entire discography to find design patterns and a common theme in previous album cover designs. Below are several designs of some of Curry’s most popular albums.
After looking at Denzel Curry’s discography, I recognized a common style between albums. They focused heavily on imagery, usually opting for a photograph of Curry, and used little to no text on the front. This style and approach was applied to the original "Melt My Eyez"(2022) cover, where one can see a single photo of Curry with no text.

ALBUM REDESIGN

The original "Melt My Eyez"(2022) design works well because of its bold imagery. The blurry figure can be recognized as Denzel Curry because of the hairstyle. The turquoise color also pairs well with the orange label and gives a “sci-fi appearance.” When looking at the typography used for the label, you also get a futuristic, space-like feeling, which is also reflected within the tracks.
In my redesign, I also used an image of Denzel Curry but chose orange as my primary color. I also used reflections throughout the design. The album's full title is "Melt My Eyez, See Your Future;" when I envision one seeing one's future, I think of crystal balls and reflection pools. Denzel Curry's reflection can be seen against the black water in the image. The front cover design can be seen as a reflection of the back. I placed the image at an angle to make the reflection more apparent. However, it also makes the design more dynamic because it's not simply horizontal or vertical.

Alternative Designs

Before reaching the final design above, I went through several design iterations. I didn't select these designs for different reasons. But, most importantly, I felt like they didn't pair well with Denzel Curry's entire discography or accurately represent his brand.
